Adams County was created by statute on February 7, 1835 and organized March 1, 1836. Its name honors the sixth President of the United States, John Quincy Adams. The site of the county seat was chosen May 18, 1836.
Decatur is a city in Adams County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,528 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Adams County. This town is named after war hero Stephen Decatur, Jr. It was founded in 1836.
Interesting Facts:
- Decatur is the home of the world's first monument dedicated exclusively to peace. It stands in the yard of the Adams County courthouse.
- The local high school in Decatur is Bellmont High School. Approximately 900 students attend BHS. Its mascots are the Braves and Squaws.
- A major annual event is the Callithumpian Parade, which is held on the night of the last Monday in October.
